A new band has arrived to Chicagoland stages and its name is UNEVEN.
They are an original metal band that in its18-month lifespan, has already gone thru lineup changes and has managed to write enough material to showcase their strongest songs [to date] in a 4-song demo EP which they distribute thru their website, at shows and wherever possible.
The band first came to my attention at the suggestion of our friend Bob Pieroni (Next Day Burning) and thru vocalist Tyke Conrady's networking efforts. The band has been [from my perspective] on a steady growth path since its inception, having participated and making it thru the final stages of a local radio station-sponsored band popularity contest dubbed 'Bandemonium' in the summer of 2009. Uneven has taken the exposure from that event along with an ever-increasing online presence thru multiple sites and has created somewhat of a buzz that is quickly turning the merely curious into new fans.
I had been wanting to see them for a while, but had decided to wait until they had settled in with the new members to the lineup (as I mentioned earlier, they've already gone thru lineup changes) and had a few shows under their belt. The opportunity came up on January 22nd when I had a chance to see the band 'live' for the first time. The show was at Glendale Heights' Shark City nightclub and the attendance at first glance was very good for a new band.
Uneven took the stage at 9:30 and it was a very straight-to-business approach as the band quickly dove into a setlist that included songs such as 'Growl', 'All About You', 'Bomb', 'My Disease' and 'The Darkness' among several others. Many in the audience were already familiar with the songs -as some are featured in the band's current EP and others are posted on the band's profile- so I could see some folks singing along and pumping their fists to the beat of the music.

Uneven's music is very riff-oriented, straight-up hard rock and metal with catchy choruses on several of their songs. The band, made up by Tyke Conrady on lead vocals/guitar, Kevin McFarland on drums, Jason Schneider on lead guitar/background vocals and Greg Marcotte on bass/background vocals were very good musically, although other than drummer McFarland who was very animated and fun to watch, the rest of the band seemed stiff and overly reserved. To their credit, they are still a relatively new, young band and I'm sure the confidence and showmanship will be more evident and shine as they get more shows under their belt. Still, their fans in the audience cheered loudly for them and some went particularly nuts when they played what I think is going to be their first single -'You Make Me Evil'.
All things considered, it was a very good show for Uneven and I believe they made some new fans that night. I am now one of them and as such, I'm looking forward to seeing them again in the not-so-distant future.
